A Rhodes Honeymoon: Where to Stay and the Most Romantic Things to Do

A honeymoon is the one trip where “doing nothing” is a perfectly good plan, and Rhodes is very good at helping you do it beautifully. There are warm, clear seas, long lazy lunches and villages that glow at dusk. But there is also more than enough to fill the days you want to fill: a medieval city, an ancient acropolis, boat trips and wine villages in the hills.

We have welcomed a lot of newlyweds to Lindos over the years. Here is what we have learned about planning a Rhodes honeymoon that feels special from the first morning to the last.

Where to stay: why couples choose Lindos

Rhodes is a big island, and where you stay makes a real difference. For honeymooners, Lindos is the clear favourite.

The village is car-free, so you walk everywhere through whitewashed lanes and pebble-mosaic courtyards. The Acropolis rises directly above you, floodlit at night. Two bays lie below: the main beach for easy swims, and Saint Paul’s Bay, a near-circular turquoise lagoon that is one of the most romantic spots in Greece. And once the day visitors leave in the late afternoon, the village becomes quiet and lamp-lit, with dinner on rooftop terraces.

The best time for a Rhodes honeymoon

• Late May and June: warm, green, long days, the sea warming up nicely.
• July and August: hottest and busiest, but reliably perfect beach weather. Plan sightseeing early and late.
• September: many people’s favourite: the warmest sea of the year, and the crowds easing.

Romantic things to do in Rhodes

Watch the sun rise over the Aegean

Lindos faces east, and sunrise over the sea is one of the loveliest moments of the day here. Set an alarm once, take a coffee to your terrace, and watch the light hit the Acropolis.

Climb the Acropolis at opening time

Walk up together as the gates open, before the heat and the crowds, and see the Temple of Athena Lindia against the morning sky with the whole coastline below you. Our practical guide to the Acropolis has the timings.

Swim at Saint Paul’s Bay

The little whitewashed chapel on the shore is one of the most popular places on the island for weddings, and it is easy to see why. Go in the early morning or late afternoon, when the water is calm and the light is soft.

Charter a boat for the day

A private boat or a sailing trip along the east coast is the classic honeymoon day: secluded coves you cannot reach by road, swimming stops, lunch on deck. Our reception can arrange sailboat charters.

Find a sunset

Taste the island’s wine

The hill village of Embonas, below Mount Attavyros, is the heart of Rhodes wine country. A slow afternoon of tasting local whites and reds, followed by dinner in the mountains, makes a lovely change from the coast.

Take a day trip to Symi

The neighbouring island of Symi, with its horseshoe harbour of pastel neoclassical mansions, is one of the prettiest in the Dodecanese and an easy boat trip from Rhodes Town.

Adjust to taste. The golden rule is to leave at least two days completely unplanned. Those are often the ones you remember.

Honeymoon tips for Rhodes

• Pace yourselves. Alternate busy days with lazy ones. The heat in midsummer makes this essential anyway.
• Rent a car for a few days only. In Lindos you walk everywhere; you only need wheels for beach days and the west coast.
• Book special dinners ahead. Rooftop tables with Acropolis views are in demand in high season.
• Build in one splurge. A private boat, a special dinner or a wine tasting makes a lovely memory without filling every day.
• Tell your hotel it is your honeymoon. Small touches are much easier to arrange in advance.
